Anne Hathaway is getting behind the wheel of the pink dream convertible for Sony’s Barbie movie.
She is in negotiations to star in the feature project, that was previously attached to Amy Schumer (who had to drop citing ‘scheduling conflicts’).
Alethea Jones, the rising Australian director, is in talks to direct the movie after being handpicked by Hathaway, who was integral in the search for a filmmaker.
According to THR The Barbie movie, at least the Schumer version, was to turn the classic Barbie mythology on its head, putting a contemporary spin on the toy with an emphasis on feminism and identity.
The script told of a woman that slowly awakens to the fact that she doesn’t fit in to perfect land of Barbies and journeys to the real world, where she discovers that being unique is an asset. The fish-out-of-water tale is supposed to be in the vein of Big or Enchanted.
Amy Pascal, Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing.
The studio is still eyeing a June 29, 2018 release but one thing that is keeping things in flux is Hathaway’s schedule. Sony is hesitant to move the release date and there’s a chance that if Hathaway’s schedule isn’t worked out in a satisfactory way, a deal may not make.
Legendary director and producer Garry Marshall died on Tuesday from complications of pneumonia, ET can confirm. He was 81. The news of his passing was first reported on the webpage of the Falcon Theatre, which he founded.

“I am devastated to hear of Garry’s passing. He was a dear friend and colleague….generous to a fault. My heart goes out to [his wife] Barbara and the entire family. We shall miss him.”
Actor Hector Elizondo, which also co-starred in Princess Diaries, briefly commented on the possibility of a Princess Diaries 3, which both Anne Hathaway and Marshall had regularly discussed.
“[Anne] was talking to Garry about doing a Princess Diaries 3. He was looking forward to being involved in that one way or another. He had another movie, our eighteenth. He said Hector we’re gonna do our 18th.”
Anne has been announced as the Global Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women, where she’ll help spotlight the issue of gender equality.
“The appointment of Anne is timely because this year, U.N. Women is driving hard to foster more positive mindsets and practical arrangements around workplaces that build and support equality for women,” Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, executive director of U.N. Women, said in a statement provided to Refinery29. “The ‘motherhood penalty’ — which means that when they become mothers, women’s pay and opportunities at work suffer — is a particularly insidious demonstration of gender inequality in the workplace.”
Mlambo-Ngcuka explained in the statement that Hathaway is an “advocate” who understands the connection between gender equality and issues like parental leave and child care. Hathaway has previously worked to spread awareness about child marriage, and she narrated the 2013 documentary, Girl Rising, about girls’ education.
Hathaway will work with U.N. women to raise awareness about “the unequal burden of care work in the home,” according to the agency’s press release. U.N. Women is working to increase access to shared parental leave and affordable child care across the globe.
