There is a lot going on in Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis’ new movie — which is why, over two years after filming Colossal, the actors are still having a tricky time nailing down exactly what it’s about. Hathaway plays Gloria, a hard-partying writer who moves back to her hometown after losing her job and boyfriend (Dan Stevens). She spends her time getting sloshed at childhood friend Oscar’s (Sudeikis) bar. And then shit gets weird when Gloria realizes she has something to do with the gigantic Kaiju monster she sees on the news attacking Seoul, South Korea. Really weird.
With its bizarre premise and unpredictable screenplay (from Spanish writer-director Nacho Vigilando), Colossal is a thrillingly original ride. It’s also a wonky vehicle for discussions about everything from toxic masculinity and sexism to alcoholism and self-destructive demons: a philosophical stoner’s dream.
While the movie itself is, in one obvious way, completely absurd, it never spins out into the stratosphere of ridiculousness, thanks to the thoroughly believable performances from Hathaway and Sudeikis. They are by turns charming and repulsive, brave and vulnerable. So we sat down with the pair to talk about the gospel of Kristen Stewart, what it actually means for a film to be “feminist,” and the unintentionally brilliant ways their new movie reflects what’s going on in the world right now.Read More

MGM‘s upcoming gender swapped remake of Frank Oz’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels appears to have found a pair of stars. Deadline reports that Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway is in talks to join Pitch Perfect franchise star Rebel Wilson in the project, titled Nasty Women. They’ll play variations on the roles originally played by Michael Caine and Steve Martin in the 1988 original.
Scripted by Jac Schaeffer, Nasty Women is based on the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels script written by Dale Launer, Stanley Shapiro, and Paul Henning. Dirty Rotten Scoundrel was, in turn, based on Stanley Shapiro and Paul Henning’s 1964 script, Bedtime Story. Directed by Ralph Levy, Bedtime Story features Marlon Brando and David Niven in the respective Wilson/Martin and Hathaway/Caine roles.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels stars Martin as a low class con artist who makes a bet with a high class confidence man (Caine) to see who can swindle an heiress out of $50,000 (and sex) first. It later was adapted into a successful stage musical in 2005. The new version will update the story by putting the focus on two lady cons attempting to get money from a rich tech prodigy.
Anne Hathaway is a down-on-her-luck woman who discovers she can manifest a Godzilla type monster halfway around the world, and wreak all kinds of havoc. Yeah, that’s the promise of Colossal, which is screening in Sundance and had its first trailer released today.
Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is a hard partying New York scene girl who is thrust into crisis when her boyfriend, Tim (Dan Stevens), grows sick of her antics and kicks her out of their apartment. With no other options, she moves back to her hometown and quickly regresses, drinking every night until last call and accepting a job at a bar owned by her childhood friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis). One day she wakes up and blurrily finds out that Seoul was terrorized by a giant creature the night before. Eventually, Gloria begins to suspect her own drunken actions are bizarrely connected to the monster rampaging in South Korea.
Colossal will open on theaters next April 7th.
