Variety is reporting that a mysterious Chinese buyer has picked up North American distribution rights to “Colossal,” an offbeat monster movie starring Anne Hathaway that opened at the festival over the weekend. No word yet on the identity of the company that put up the money, but it will be revealed in coming weeks when the backers announce an investment in a U.S. distributor. It will get a theatrical release in 2017.
“Colossal” was one of the festival’s hotter targets because it stars Anne Hathaway in a showy role as an alcoholic New Yorker and earned solid notices when it debuted. The film drew interest from other buyers, including indie label A24.
In the movie, written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo (“Open Windows”), Hathaway plays a character who, after getting dumped by her boyfriend, discovers that she can control a creature in Seoul.
